Music
Often times it is hard to find music that reflects the lives of LGBTQ people unless the artists themselves are LGBTQ. Below is a list of LGBTQ music artists and is broken down by genre, underneath each artist is a more detailed genre like indie rock or alternative pop.
Here are a couple of terms that will help in understanding this list:
Riotgrrl– Riot grrrl was an underground feminist punk movement based in Washington, DC, Olympia, Washington, Portland, Oregon, and the greater Pacific Northwest which existed in the early to mid-1990s. (source: Wikipedia)
Homo Hop– Homo hop is a genre of hip hop music performed by LGBT artists and performers. It has been described as “a global movement of gay hip-hop MCs and fans determined to stake their claim in a genre too often associated with homophobia and anti-gay lyrics. (source: Wikipedia)
Queercore– As a musical genre, it may be distinguished by lyrics exploring themes of prejudice and dealing with issues such as sexual identity, gender identity and the rights of the individual; more generally bands offer a critique of society endemic to their position within it, sometimes in a light-hearted way, sometimes seriously. (source: Wikipedia)
Electroclash– Electroclash is a style of music that fuses New Wave and electronic dance music. It emerged in New York in the later 1990s. (source: Wikipedia)
